2015 GMC Canyon will Debut at Detroit Auto Show in January

Although it was pretty much expected, now it’s official. The 2015 GMC Canyon will be unveiled at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which kicks off January 13th.

The news came from the event’s newsletter, NAIAS Connect, which gives a list of vehicles that will be displayed in Detroit.

While the Canyon’s cousin, the Chevy Colorado, was debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show this fall, General Motors chose to split the debuts in order to create separate identities for both midsize trucks.

2015 GMC Canyon Heading for Motor City

GM has yet to give out the details for the 2015 Canyon, it is likely that the truck will be launched with the same engines that power the Colorado – a standard 2.5L four-cylinder and an available 3.6L V6.

The 2016 Chevy Colorado will also come with a diesel option, which will likely find its way into Canyon.

NAIAS LogoGeneral Motors has a great opportunity to capitalize on a midsize truck market that currently consists exclusively of outdated foreign trucks. Right now, the segment is led by the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, which have not been updated in many years.

Both Dodge and Ford have been out of the market since 2011, leaving the gate wide-open for GMC to offer a high-quality domestic midsize pickup.

The GMC Canyon is expected to have its own style and purpose, separate from the Chevy Colorado. While General Motors is placing the Colorado as a lifestyle vehicle for people who enjoy outdoor activities, the GMC Canyon is expected to fit the needs of hard-working professionals who don’t necessarily need the power and capability of a full-size truck.

The 2015 GMC Canyon is expected to borrow some design cues from the larger Sierra and offer segment-leading towing with better fuel-efficiency than full-size trucks.
