General Motors Announces Major Energy-Saving Project

General Motors Announces Major Energy-Saving Project

General Motors, maker of Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles, has announced that a major energy saving project will be completed by the end of November.

A 1.8 megawatt rooftop solar project will provide nearly 3% of the electricity at GM’s Toledo transmission plant in Ohio.

That percentage may sound small, but it’s equivalent to the power consumption of 200 homes in the Unites States.

The project will also be the largest rooftop array in the state of Ohio.

GM Becoming Global Leader in Energy, Environment

General Motors has made incredible strides towards energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

In total, GM’s global solar panel footage will cover the equivalent of 100 football fields.

By the end of 2013, GM will have 40 megawatts of solar energy installed at its facilities across the globe, making it one of the most environmentally-focused organizations in the world.

“(The solar project) proves to our employees and the people who live in and around Toledo that clean energy plays a significant role in the building of our vehicles.”

– Rob Threlkeld, GM manager of renewable energy

1382548995948GM’s commitment to the solar industry has been recognized by the Solar Energy Industries Association. The group named GM a “Solar Champion” at a luncheon in Chicago, saying that the automaker “is helping lead the way in the use of clean, affordable solar energy nationwide”.

General Motors has solar panel-powered facilities in locations across the globe, including Germany and Spain.

Leaders at GM admit that adding solar panels to their facilities is not only good for the environment, but also good for the company’s bottom line. Avoiding energy bills allows the manufacturer to create more cost-effective and affordable cars and trucks.

In addition to the solar panels, GM has also pushed forward with electric vehicle charging stations. Nine GM facilities have stations that use solar energy to power electric vehicles, literally creating sun-powered cars.

The automaker has 395 workplace charging stations and has provided 4,300 charging stations to dealers.
